Mental Health Tip: Improve Your Surroundings

Improve your surroundings.png

When we walk into a spa or take a stroll in nature, within minutes we begin to feel happier, focused and more relaxed. Why? Because our surroundings affect our mood, our relationships and our ability to get things done. Like the people in our lives, our surroundings play a huge role in our mental health.

Take a look around your environment, and ask yourself:

  1. How do you feel?

  2. What’s working in your space?

  3. Anything stress you out?

  4. How can you make it more relaxing and functional so you feel better?

As you answer these questions, can you see the impact it is having on your day to day life? How can you make it better?

One of the biggest culprits that induce stress is clutter:

Did you know that clutter causes physical and unconscious chaos in our lives. Think about those piles and stacks and how much time is wasted searching for the keys or a remote. Clutter brings with it stress and you can do something about it!

Decluttering is all about sorting and identifying what is no longer serving you, so you can bring the calm back into your life!

Here are some ways to begin de-cluttering your space:

1. Choose a starting place and take an hour to sort the “pile” into categories like trash, used regularly, donate, memorabilia to be saved, etc.

2. If you are unsure of where to place an item put it in an “unsure box” and adopt a use it or lose it mindset.....unless you used that item within the last 6 months it goes to donation/trash.

3. After trash and donating is done, it’s important that you find a place for everything. Get some appealing organizational tools like woven baskets, oversize clear jars, and drawer inserts as it’s easier to keep everything tidy if you know where it goes.

4. Adopt and continue to follow the use it or lose it mindset with every item that comes into your home.

Hope that helps!!!
