We get the struggle when life gets expectantly hard

Here at Davis Inspired, we get it. We get that life happens, and not always according to plan. We get that struggles and stress go hand in hand. You see we had plans, solid goals and action steps that were working in our lives. Then, life happened and my husband was critically injured in an explosive blast. (Check out our story here). Our challenges were not little, they were big honkin no clue how to manage changes that were overwhelming. AND stressfull.

In the midst of all the chaos, we needed to connect with people who understood what we were feeling without us having to re-hash the details over and over again. It was so helpful to get insight from people who had similar experiences and apply it to our lives as we found ways to manage the stress and difficulty we were dealing with.

What were the big challenges we faced in our life?

Let me answer that question with another question. What in our lives wasn’t effected? Everything was stressful. Sure that’s the broad sweeping answer, but yes everything we knew about our life changed. The simplest tasks became challenging. I likened my husbands experience to that of having a newborn. Everything took more time and we had to learn how to do normal tasks with a whole new set of obstacles. From daily activities and household responsibilities to our jobs and ultimately our lifestyle, nothing was the same.

I’ll write more about the specifics, the toll it took and the strategies we used to walk through even the toughest days in future posts, but for now this bullet point version will catch you up to speed.

For Geoff the challenges included:

  • An above knee amputation of his right leg.

  • Traumatic Brain Injury

  • Post Traumatic Stress

  • Change in mission from combat/combat readiness (he is a combat engineer in the US Army), to being re-assigned to a Warrior Transition Battalion where his mission became one of healing.

  • Years of rehabilitation, multiple surgeries and the task of learning to walk again.

For Judy:

  • Instantly put into the caretaker roll

  • THE advocate and box keeper for all medical, logistic and mental health support.

  • Closed her businesses (DASIUM, Mighty Parenting and The Direction Diva) to focus on supporting Geoff’s recovery.

  • Struggled to find a balance between wife, mom and caregiver.

What were some of key strategies that helped?
